I apologize for my rude bluntness but maybe they look at you like you're slow when you're trying to awkwardly hide your stutter instead of stuttering. I have have been quite severe most of my life and few people look at me like I'm slow. I will keep stuttering my word out and they eventually pick up on the situation.
