I remember when I started my first job after graduating. I was supposed to answer the phone “Computer Department, <my name> speaking”. There’s no way in hell I could do it, but I had to answer the phone, so I tried my best. Usually I just managed a “meeeurgh” noise that people grew to recognize and said “oh hi <my name>”. It was brutal, but over time you become basically numb to it. I went on the McGuire Programme at age 27, amd that totally turned things around. 53 now and still stutter a little, but I only have distant memories of the utter panic, humiliation and desperation I used to feel on a daily basis.
