I’d like to express again that when a person has a stutter, stammer, or speech impediment…it is in NO WAY LINKED TO any psychological condition—albeit anxiety or mental illness. While I was in college and considering topics for my Abnormal Psych paper, I argued that this all too frequent speech impediment is both misunderstood/misdiagnosed! My professor had to swallow his pride when reading my paper which I had entitled— “Stuttering: Psychology or Physiological” In my paper, I also clearly defined some of the prominent figures both in history & today’s society who have NOT allowed a stutter to inhibit further successes in LIFE (to be mentioned later) Okay, so there’s a technique known as: “Belly Breathing” or “Diaphragmatic Breathing” which will initiate FLUENCY during your speech. Depending on which hand you write with (you’re going to use the opposite)! I’m sure you are asking…why? Well your dominant hand has more musculature~~weighs more! So when you go to sleep or just have the opportunity to lay down-do so FLAT on your back. Place the non-dominant hand on your belly, and relax. Breathing in & out through your nose while watching your hand rise and fall with each breath. Doing so will have initiated correct breathing patterns. A phrase I was taught to recite to myself before I began any scenario where I would be speaking was: “MEN MARCHED ON MARS!” “MEN MARCHED ON MARS!” This simple statement surprisingly aligns all of the muscles used in speech. I promise you this will work! Prominent figures with a stutter: ~Winston Churchill ~James Earl Jones ~Bruce Willis Just those three names should be enough to show you that a stutter is able to be conquered, overcome, and unable to keep ANYONE from finding success in their LIVES!
