I’m one of the fortunate that can say that my fluency has definitely improved with age. That being said it’s certainly not 100% all of the time and once my stutter kicks in it’s easy to deduce I’ve struggled with it in the past. The gain for public figures to say they once stuttered is a sort of social grooming to show they operate on higher level of empathy than “regular”people and they are more relatable than “normal” people. It’s the whole “I know the struggle.” routine. It’s has amazed me to know the amount of people who have stuttered but no longer stutter....it’s the whole - ”Oh. Oh. You stutter? Oohhhhh it’s ok. I used to stutter too. It’s no big deal. Really. I used to stutter. Once I grew up and got more confident in myself it eventually went away.. You’ll get there too. Don’t worry. ” - routine. They never stuttered. It’s just the bullshit people say to seem nicer than they really are and they actually end up making themselves seem less genuine.
