I can only tell you my experience. I would say that although speech therapists are well intentioned, most have never stuttered at all and don't fully understand stuttering. They don't understand the mental anguish of stuttering. I did however work with a therapist. He was not a speech therapist, but a dentist and stand-up comic, that used to stutter. He used more of a cognitive behavioral approach. If you can find someone that addresses stuttering from that viewpoint, that's what I would go with. But again, this is just my experience. I'm sure others have found success through more traditional therapists as well. I would also caution you about looking for a "cure." There was no one day I woke up and said "my stutter is gone." It was incremental improvement over time. Just like trying to break any habit, there's good days and bad days, but with consistent effort you can see dramatic improvement to the point where it's no longer a major part of your life.
