Many stutterers seem to believe that every, or even most, stutters are just like theirs. And while a lot of us share experiences and feelings, every stutterer is different. Just because you feel limited in your avenues of expression doesn't mean that's the standard or even should be. I know stutterers in every walk of life. There's a pilot in this sub, an EMT, doctors, lawyers who have to talk in court, phone support personnel, you name it. There are also people like myself who have chosen to build their careers around a complete lack of necessary speaking tasks. Neither is right or wrong. At the end of the day, the important thing is to do what's best for you. If working as a professor is going to cause you nothing but consistent misery because of your speech, then it's basic self-care to choose something else, and that's okay. Likewise if your passion for a career exceeds your fear of speaking, then go for it, full stop. Point being, do what's right for *you*, not other people.
