I am sure I have lost jobs or promotions because of it. But I also never wanted to be a manager - I just want to work and not deal with the politics - so that definitely has something to do with it but not sure of the percentages. I am also an introvert with anxiety so was never good at networking. Would I be a better networker if I was fluent? Probably not because I would still be anxious. Positive is I have persevered and at 53, put up with zero bullshit. I still remember the bullying I went through in middle school and will not tolerate that. Funny story time: I had to give a presentation to our VPs every quarter. You know it was a hot mess and I stuttered horribly. Fast forward a few years and a new job within the same company. Those same VPs all addressed me by my name but did not do so before or after me. Ergo, I made an impression. lol. Another funny story: I am on medication that puts me at risk of blood clots. Most of my appointments were yes/no conversations. The one time I had to have an actual conversation with my doctor, I stuttered. She freaked out that I was having a stroke. It took me about five minutes that I was not.
