Hi OP, speech therapist here. First of all it was completely wrong for your job to let you go due to your stuttering & if you’re absolutely certain that’s what happened you could make a fuss about it. Especially because it sounds like your stuttering never actually interfered with your productivity. Secondly, & I can’t emphasize this enough: there is no cure for stuttering. Even if you are to find a speech therapist, since you’ve been stuttering since childhood well into adulthood, it is likely you will continue to stutter forever and that is 100% okay. The best a speech therapist could do is help you to manage your stuttering which really means managing any struggles you have that lead to more severe stuttering moments. But it sounds like you’re fine with your stuttering so you may not even have any of those secondary behaviors. If you are able to express yourself and meet your needs, there is nothing wrong with the way you talk. The real problem is with your listeners. As we learn more and we get more people who stutter working as speech therapists, the ideals around stuttering are beginning to change. We’re learning that we really need to educate more people about stuttering and accepting it as a difference rather than a disorder. Just because it may take a bit more patience from your listener, doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with the way you speak.
