I work at a library! I'll complete 2 years next week and just my luck that I started at the busiest library in my area (800 people a day with two schools right next to us) I won't lie and say I didn't struggle at first because I was so new and I didn't know how to answer people's questions. I'll explain what helped me when I started 1. Accept you're going to stutter and accept some people may have a negative reaction to it- I got used to the strange looks and chuckles especially with my blocks but I encountered far more patient people than impatient people. 2. Once you introduce yourself to your new management and coworkers just give them a heads up that you stutter. 3. This one may be easier said than done but try to relax! Nothing makes your stutter worse than anxiety and those negative intrusive thoughts! One thing that helps me calm down is finding the positive in things For example "I'm so grateful to have been hired" or "this is such a beautiful library" or "my coworkers are cool!" 4. Pay attention to how your coworkers answer customer questions! I found that I stutter a lot when I'm not sure how to answer someone's question so having an example is helpful 4 b. Once you know how your coworkers answer questions then feel free to adjust your answer to fit you! If certain letters or phrases make you stutter than replace it with something else. 5. You mentioned how you're afraid you won't be able to explain where a book is...I had the same issue so I always said "let me show you where it is" I simply got up and walked them to the section which requires way less socializing and makes you look good as you're taking initiative. 6. I'm not sure what kind of library you're at but I'm assuming you'll make a library card at some point. I HATE asking people for their contact info and then having to repeat it to make sure it's correct so I simply ask them to write it down. Less talking and less mistakes. 7. If someone's being a dick then get up and find someone else. You don't have to take any sort of disrespect and if your management is worth a damn than they won't want you to either. 8. You stutter and I'm sure one of your customers will too. I've met a few fellow customers who stutter and it's always nice when they realize I stutter too! You deserve to work at that library just like anyone else who doesn't have stutter so own it and just keep improving yourself There's a lot of worries that I had when I started but I'm almost 2 years in and it's gotten a lot better. You'll do great! And the more you interact with customer than the easier it'll get.
