Some people may never have heard stuttering and may be clueless about it. Although I’ve always had an attractive appearance,some women have become frightened when I stopped them for directions, looked them in the eye, and began to stutter. I was presenting to a police Sargent and his two police officers, and one of the officers giggled uncontrollably whenever I stuttered. I ignored it and continued speaking to the Sargent for several more minutes of occasional stuttering triggering uncontrolled giggling in the one police officer. Suddenly, the Sarent turned and snapped at the officer, “Control yourself,” while I continued talking about the serious matter. Uncontrolled inappropriate giggling is a sign of intense anxiety. The poor police officer was so anxious and unfamiliar with my bad speech that he embarrassed himself in front of his Sargent. I wasn’t a police officer, but I was the highest ranking person in that office. But I was the worst speaker. And that’s ok.
