Most people don't understand what's going on, so they're weird about it and might accidentally come off as rude (but they're actually just ignorant). Usually that comes in the form of awkward laughter, and when that happens I very deliberately don't laugh with them and sort of just politely and silently make it clear that they shouldn't have done that. Of the people who do realize what's happening, they are either overly sympathetic (unnecessary and usually condescending/infantilizing) or they're extremely cool and unfazed (like, "oh you stutter? word." and then we go on about our business). It has been a LONG time since anybody was overtly mean to me about it. The last time I can actually remember was when I was a teenager and I had to call my restaurant job to ask a question and the manager told me that my parents needed to call instead because in their *very important fast-paced environment* they don't have time to wait for me to talk. People flirting with me have tried to tell me it's cute but I shut that shit down immediately. Absolutely not. The person who I would later marry was refreshingly straightforward the first time I brought it up when we started dating, he was like "honestly it's a little bit distracting but I'll get better at knowing how to properly communicate with you."
