Patience Do folks think a listener being patient will help a stutterer??? A mild stutterer who has little problem being understood. I can understand a listener being patient for that. But a very severe stutter person- no matter how patient a listener is most likely won't understand what the severe stutterer is saying. It's very tough on the listener too. A patient listener won't make a stutterer stutter any less. If anything, won't a severe stutterer want to have words filled in for them because they have so much difficulty?? A patient person is being forced to endure something very uncomfortable. I have been walked away from for the simple reason they had to get somewhere and couldn't wait for me. I didn't blame them for walking away from how awkward I sounded. Maybe they felt I was holding them up with my stuttering. Maybe listeners are told to be patient just to be polite when in fact they would rather here someone speak regular. The longer a listener waits, the more discomfort the listener has to endure. No one likes to feel uncomfortable!! For a very severe stutter that no listener can understand, I don't think listeners want to wait that out. No matter how patient a listener is, they probably still won't understand what a very severe stutterer is saying. Sorry-but that's how it is. I posted a post like this already 2 days ago which was very insitefull, but I don't know why it was removed. Probably because there was truth to it. If it gets removed again, it's probably someone that can't face the truth of what was written. People that are patient are not making a stutterer any more fluent. That would be great if people's patience would make us more fluent! Folks think if we give stutterers patience, the stutterer will be able to say what they are trying to say. What if stutterers can't say what they want to say because a listener chose to wait and not jump in??? Sure my perspective is different but it doesn't have to be deleted because it doesn't agree with ya..........we need to face the fact that listeners can't drop anything and wait for us struggle for minutes. No matter how patient a listener is, they most likely won't understand a very bad stutterer. Especially after every therapy a stutterer has taken was of temporary help.....and right back to square one.
