For me at least, I used to try and avoid stuttering by using synonyms and other vocabulary that would transition me away from danger-syllables. Sometimes it would work, and sometimes I would work in my brain too fast and speak before I made a conclusion, leading to me saying something weird and stuttering anyways. Nowadays I still have known safe-synonyms and I'll allocate much of my concentration directly to speaking properly. If I can sound professional for a majority of my conversation, then I can play off a stutter or a pause as me verbally expressing that I'm thinking carefully about what I say. If that makes sense. It's difficult to describe, but it's taken my entire life to practice.
