I wondered if I could ask a question. Hi all, I hope this is okay to ask here. I worked at a restaurant in the past and I had a customer who had a stutter. He was really struggling to get the order out that he wanted. As a server there, I kind of could tell what he wanted, but there were variations that he hadn’t gotten out yet. I wasn’t sure how to act: would it be rude to jump ahead, and try to guess what he was trying to say? For instance, to try and help him by saying things he might be wanting and let him affirm or deny? On that day, I chose not to do that, as I didn’t want to patronize him. That is, I wanted to just be patient and give him time to say what he wanted. So that’s what I did, however the longer it took, the more flustered it kind of seemed like he got trying to say the words. Basically I want to know, is it polite to try and help out with the order, in an instance like this? Or is it polite to let them take their time, even if that seems to be making them feel even more on the spot? Anyway, thank you for reading. I live in a small town and to be honest, I don’t come across many folks who may need some kind of special assistance (or not— I guess that’s the point of my post). But I am passionate about people and customer service, and just want to know what the right thing would be. Thank you guys
