I didn’t see any type of therapist until I was in my late 20s after stuttering since age 12. He was a former stutterer and approached the treatment from a psychological perspective instead of a mechanical one. He said something that I tend to agree with and this is to be careful with using modified speech techniques because they prevent you from speaking in your true voice. I’m not sure if this is what you’re getting at but as stutterers we feel we can’t express our true selves and some of the techniques taught to overcome stuttering, while they may allow you to speak fluently, still don’t feel like your true voice.
