I was 29 years old when I learnt that you're supposed to close your menu to indicate to the wait staff that you're ready to order. I always left mine open (and now I reopen it) because I need to read from it, and worst case scenario point. And yes, there have also been times when I've told someone I'm with what I want so they can order for me if I'm really having too much trouble.
