Oh, basic was a blast. The gas chamber is going to suck, but the stutter won't make any difference in there, 90% of other soldiers weren't able to get any words out either due to the sheer amount of snot flowing and coughing too, so you won't be alone. The Drill Sergeants may give you shit about stuttering, I got called, "Private Stutters" on occasion, but most Drills give everybody shit. You won't be alone. I went through in 2011, and have heard things have changed a bit since then, more phone usage, etc. Funny story, at the end of basic, during the final inspections, the battallion commander was walking through down the line doing ASU inspections and asking us soldiers certain questions. Right before he gets to me, another Dril Sergeant walks up really quick next to the LTC, grins wide and looks eager to see the shit storm that will most certainly happen. He asks me, "PVT, what does NBC stand for?" I hesitate, throat closes up, get stuck on the N. I take a deep breath from my belly and say Nuclear, Biological, and get stuck again on the C in Chemical. He slams his hand on my shoulder and says, "You know what you're talking about. Good shit, Private." And moves down to the next guy. Afterwards, my Drill took me aside and says, "As long as you know your shit, someone will sit through you stuttering as long as it takes you to finish. If someone is asking you for something, most times it's because you have something they don't. You're the one helping them, and if they're being an asshole about it, embellish, take a bit longer." Its stuck with me a lot, getting out 3 years ago, and becoming a field engineer for a defense contractor for a program in Taiwan. Now off to my next contract. The Army was a great time, it got me the job I have now. You have stuff that definitely sucks, but your battle buddy next to you is in the shit just as deep as you are. Have fun, and joke around to make it suck less for each other. PM me if you have any questions or need any help, seriously, I had a buddy I could talk to who also went through and had a stutter worse than mine, and it made it a bit easier.
