I think you've answered the question: it was possible to live a normal life until you've turned 17. It wasn't a different world with different people and you're also not a different person with other type of stuttering. I think the only that changed is just how you look at things in your life, and it's causing huge anxiety, which makes stuttering much worse. Maybe you should try to reapprise your values in life, and/or see a psychologist. As for me, I spent a lot of time in therapies, and now I can see my life pretty normal. Of course, stuttering is always an extra when it comes to difficulties, but I also believe that every single person has some kind of 'defect', which makes them think they're in harder situation.
