The truth is, that the avoiding behavior and having a goal of being a covert stutterer IS actually what makes your stutter worse. I had 2 job interviews this week. First one, I said nothing about my stutter and had halting blocks every few words, constant thinking of alternate words/phrases to use, and consequently, sounded nervous, clunky and uninformed. Second one, I began by disclosing my stutter, and except for a few micro-blocks, I was fluent, calm, and able to crack a few jokes. To get to this place, it took me a few weeks/months of hard work of doing the opposite of what I was automatically doing (trying to hide stutter, avoiding eye contact, rushing through words/phrases when I had fear of stuttering, taking deep inhales). The longer you go out of your way to hide your stutter, the worse it will get. The more you disclose, the more fluent you will get. If you goal is control over talking and fluency, try this.
