There is most definitely a novelty effect. I read a tip once that you should pinch your thumb while speaking, because that sensation will distract you from the fear of stuttering. Somehow, it seemed to work. For a little while. I've had that happen with other "stuttering tips" as well. I know being covert is a big issue. You enter every social situation on edge, with a damage control mindset. You can never be present in the moment, because all your mental energy is going toward trying not to stutter. The simplest interaction can feel like a tightrope walk. I've gone through periods of my life when I'm really working on that, and trying to own my stutter, but then I fall back into old patterns. Thanks for the encouragement!
