I was prescribed it many years ago for quite severe social and performance anxiety (which I think was party caused by my stutter in childhood) I try to take the smallest dose, take it as little as often and preserve it for presentations at work, as before I’d get so nervous that I’d feel like passing out. I didn’t want to lose my job over the issue. Anyway I think it somewhat helps, but not entirely. I am a woman and my speech deteriorates significantly before my period, and propranolol will do absolutely nothing for me during this time. Otherwise for the rest of the month it helps me feel less physically anxious which in turn helps me stutter somewhat less. It made a bit of a difference for me when talking on the phone actually. Generally I’ve found that my speech only actually improves when I’ve been sleeping well (shock) and I am less stressed. But tbh life happens and we are all invariably under-slept and stressed. But I try not to beat myself up about it. Sometimes I spend some time practicing the costal breathing exercises I learned on the McGuire programme and I do think that helps calm me mentally, and subsequently my speech improves. It’s taken me years of trial and error and collecting personal data to figure out when my speech is worse and when it improves, and to figure out my own personal triggers.
