I totally understand what your saying, and your right we have to hold on to all the good feelings and memories as we get enough bad already. But OP obviously didn't enjoy the compliment, it didn't give him a 'boost' like you said. Everyone perceives/recieves such 'compliment' differently. Something that'd give you a 'boost' might be a let down for someone else :)
