Not too late to the party to help me. Actually, I feel a little teary because this has been such an isolating experience. I’m sorry you’re experiencing this too. It can be bewildering and so isolating, especially when you’re so accustomed to fluency that there are times you pen your moth to speak and forget that it might come out in stammering and frustration. Interestingly I’m in the Midwest and Mayo is my primary medical provider. I’ve been referred to the main center in Rochester, but they’ve determined that only ONE si get neurological sub specialist can see me. They told me it would take an average of 6-12 months to get in! But they only schedule 12 weeks out. Tell me how that math works out??? So I’m invited to call “as often as I want” to see if there are cancellations. Lol. Is 3X day too much? 😂. They seem to o relook the fact that merely making a phone call is a chore. I did finally get an SLP evaluation from a speech therapist at a local branch and 6 weeks later, an appointment to begin therapy. I’m thinking of dragging my dog over to our former trainer to see if she can work on polite public dog behavior so I can take the dog with me as a service dog. The dog already alerts to my distress and provides comforting and stabilizing behaviors (but I’m not gonna drag a poorly trained pet out in public and parade her around as a therapy dog-that’s insulting to people engaging properly trained therapy dogs). I was really interested in the observations you shared regarding dogs and not stuttering in their oresence. It makes sense. I find it perolthow I stutter more or less in different situations. I had identified “stress” as a trigger, yet I had a big argument w my husband last night and barely stuttered. If that’s not stressful, what is? So why wouldn’t I stutter? Maybe because I had a couple of drinks? If that’s it, great, NOT a viable solution. 😒 Anyway, thanks for your reply. I’ve called my local unit which has a graduate program in speech pathology and am hopeful they may augment whatever Mayo has to offer (current estimate is therapy every 3 weeks for 12 weeks) which doesn’t sound near adequate. I hope you are doing well and continuing to make progress.
