I think it gives false hope, and it's also implying that we have something wrong with us that we are trying to get rid of. I think that's a pretty negative attitude, and it's not really helping any of us. I remember as a kid being told by my speech therapist that if I didn't work hard enough or if I didn't use the techniques that I would end up stuttering the rest of my life. He then went on to tell me about a guy that would only order a ham and cheese sandwich when he went out to eat because it was the only thing he could say fluently. Even to this day it still makes me angry about how stupid and ignorant those comments were!
