The catch is that public schools *do have* professional speech therapists, fully accredited, Masters level, etc- but they are often overworked, and have no training in treating dysfluency. My mom has friend she met in birthing class (while pregnant w me) who was a school based SLP in a top CT school district. Despite knowing me my entire life, she had no idea I struggled w stuttering (I was super covert…) So I agree, but most people need to learn that dysfluency actually has very little in common with articulation disorders. Otherwise, they think any SLP is better than none. I’m a firm believes that a SLP w no training in dysfluency and treating it like articulation issues will actually make dysfluency worse. “Take a deep breath, slow down, and focus on your tongue placement” Actually, in the right context (not like above) slowing down has been enormously helpful as I used to talk quickly to get it over with.
