I had repetition stutter since I was in the 2nd grade. I’m over here turning over an engine trying to get an r word out. It was something my parent thought I’d grow out of. (Rightfully so as I understand it’s normal for children) I went when I was 4th grade to a school therapist for R articulation. Mainly I remember singing an R song all sesh every sesh, only after she spent lots of time coaching me on my tongue. I didn’t appreciate it then but I’m forever grateful to her and what she did for me. She was going to help me with my stutter but I ended up moving. My parents had literally no involvement that I recall. I didn’t go see a therapist until many years later as an adult; I was about to leave the army and wanted to get help before I might not have insurance. My first therapist wasn’t the best, I think it was because my stutter was mild and she didn’t know how to help me. It seemed like a huge waste of time and I was embarrassed for not stuttering when I was there haha I left on assignment and when I came back I reapplied to get help again, but now I had a better idea of surefire ways to bring out my blocks. I find it very difficult to read aloud without blocks so my new therapist and I decided that I should read aloud during our sessions and work on strategies. Once we figured out how to bring out my blocks it was pretty straight forward and I was excited to go to therapy. Before I left their practice, we scheduled an interview /presentation type deal with all the therapists there and my fluency was godly. Breathing and cadence is so so important. I have a therapist available to me now via tele-therapy although I reach out to her rarely as I’ve learned to deal with it better over time. I think the best thing to do for adults is to work together and if that means doing things unorthodox (I.e. meeting at a coffee shop), that might be the best way to help them. I hope you don’t get beat down like all the other SLPs on the other sub. Thanks for asking and best of luck. P.S. I can’t give my SLPs all the credit, I also went to go see psychologists and other support groups that targeted my anxiety and PTSD.
