I also started going out more and doing exposure therapy for few months. I've seen some improvements. As you have said it's extremely uncomfortable and somedays are like hell. The more you get out of your comfort zone, talking to people the more stress you'll get afterwards but after reflecting the past you'll see improvements. Yes there's still self doubt, anxiety and low self esteem but facing with peoples become less stressful. Avoiding will only suppress those feelings.
