I once had a great first interview at a restaurant for a hostess position. They loved me but said it was down to me and one other girl. I didn’t have a car but I used Uber to get myself wherever I needed to go. They called me for a second interview and I was so nervous I had to take two shots of vodka first to loosen myself up. I walked in not very confident and I met with the man who owned the place. I stuttered my butt off and his face looked visibly uncomfortable. At the end of the interview, he told me I was stunning and fit the look they were going for but my lack of my own car didn’t work for them. I knew that was a lie. It was my stutter and he was trying to flatter me while telling me no. He quickly excused himself and thanked me for my time. That was 4 years ago and that knocked me down hard. That being said, the next week I met with the owner of a fine dining restaurant in a very nice town and he picked up on my stutter and asked me about it. He was kind about it and said he’d never met someone like me before. Gave me a job and I was there for two years. He really took a chance on me and constantly complimented me on how my fluency was getting better as well as my confidence and my social skills. Some people, some jobs will never understand. You just have to find that special one with a boss that has patience with what they don’t understand. I’m a receptionist now but that job changed my life.
