35 with a “mild” stutter that may be similar. I stutter enough that’s it’s noticeable to those who interact with me often, or in those specific situations we all know so well (specific names/places/drive thru/etc.) What I’ve learned is that fluent people rarely think about speech, so they don’t “hear” our disfluency like we do. As a result, you’ll often hear people say they “don’t hear it”, when we know every disfluent syllable. It’s helped me to realize that I don’t have to be 100% fluent to be passably fluent, and people will often think of a block as if a typically fluent person just getting stuck on a word. It helps to change my mindset from getting anxious about not being 100% fluent to just being “pretty good”, which takes the edge off/reduces anxiety/makes me actually more fluent. TLDR; accept that 80-90% is a fair target to shoot for, not 100% is okay, and most people truly don’t think like we do and don’t put any thought into it either way after we finish saying whatever it is we’re saying.
