I was taught that stuttering is a learned behavior, as is fluency. To speak more broadly, speech is a learned behavior / skill. When I received speech therapy to become fluent, the approach they took was kind of a back-to-square one system. I learned to use proper breathing, how to say single syllables, single words, etc. They built me up from the basics. I agree with the movies in the head analogy. I can remember thinking about the fact I would stutter before having to speak. The anticipation of stuttering feeding the stutter. I can't imagine going through the program that worked for me without the guidance I received. I made a lot of mistakes along the way. Not sure how I would have course corrected without guidance.
