I told a company to pass on me for a job due to my stutter but they still want me to come in. =) It's a very small company (kickstarter in 2011) with only about 10 employees. I've been getting burnt out at my current company so I applied for a job they posted. It was for the Retail and Community Manager for their first brick and mortar store so it was going to consist of lots of making and taking phone calls. There would also be interactions with any walk-in customers. I already have anxiety around phones and new people so I knew this wasn't made for me. Myself and a few other applicants made it past the first round of review. I received more information about the role and that confirmed I was biting off more than I could chew. I sent an email to the CEO and told her to do what was best for the company which was to pass on me for the role due to my stutter. I told her I was still hell bent on joining the team and I asked her to keep me in mind if any opportunity arose. She immediately responded with, "Gosh, we are excited to meet you. Send me your resume once you've updated it and I'll schedule a time for you to come meet the team." Mind you I had to make it past another round of reviewing before I could even sit down for an in-person interview but I get to skip all of that apparently. There ARE good companies out there who want to employ stutterers. Don't let the shitty companies that turn you down have a negative effect on you. Apply for the position you want and be up front about your stutter. You may be surprised how receptive companies can be. It's not written in stone yet but I think I have a good chance of getting some sort of role within the company.
