The act of stuttering is *literally* the least of the average stutterer's problem. The biggest hurdle is learning to let go of some theoretical, idealized version of yourself, who is perfectly fluent, always clever as a result, always stands up for themselves, never lets an opportunity pass them by, can shut down any argument by way of spoken wit, and is freakishly charismatic. It's a lie. Even if you were fluent, you'd probably only be one of those things: fluent. A stutter is just a sort of fucky way of talking. I mean, just think about it objectively. That's literally all it is. Inefficient speech. Everything else is just the baggage we pack on our trip to a fantasy land where we never face rejection or ridicule. It doesn't exist. Even fluent people face rejection and ridicule. The average stutterer is not being sabotaged by their speech. They're sabotaging themselves because they can't accept it for what it is. We are definitely our own worst enemies. Just not quite in the way you're presenting.
