I have a severe stutter and spent almost 15 years in therapy. My stutter was worse when I finally left therapy than when I started. The techniques and tricks of traditional therapy don't work because SLPs don't treat it as a phobia, they're only interested in the mechanical function of speech. If you have no associated anxiety and have a minor stutter, then traditional speech therapy may work for you (in essence, they teach you how to better move your mouth). Any more than that, and you're better off working on your feelings relating to your stutter and learning how to stutter openly.
