I think the problem is that it can be funny and the misconception is about what is the subject of the laugh. It is not you! Not a person. It is the word, the stuttering here and now. When I understood it and started to even joke about it like: "oh this fucking word, I just can't say it, not up to me, sorry (with a smile)", I defused so many mines in my head and people just know I stutter and somehow without me being agressive or angry, or explaing "how hard is to stutter" they understand it much much better.
