Is it common for stutterers to use nicknames?

Is it common for stutterers to use nicknames? I've had a stutter since I was a child (I'm 20 now). I want to have a normal life and have fun, but saying my name has caused me so much anxiety that I'm scared of meeting new people. I have came to the conclusion of using a shortened version of my name to reduce the stress of doing introductions. I was wondering if anyone else could relate and that I'm not overreacting.
