It's not cute, people are just ignorant and somehow think that "complimenting" your disability will make you feel good. Dudes did it to me all the time when I was younger/dating. A friend of mine, who uses a wheelchair, has described similar behavior from people who treat him like their "lil buddy" instead of treating him like the adult man that he is. It's all very condescending.
