Writing Advice w/ Stuttering Char. Hello, everyone! I’m currently writing a fantasy novel, and one of the sub characters has a stutter. I’ve already done my research on how to write their stuttering and what to avoid, but one of the things I have for them is that they have a tragic backstory. I saw that someone from the stuttering community said that they don’t believe it’s a good idea to have a stuttering character have a tragic backstory as it seems like the stereotype that all those that stutter have some tragic backstory. The thing is, though, I am not giving them a tragic backstory *because* of their stutter. Do you all think I should keep it or ditch it? I’ll most likely create a different character that has a stutter and keep this because I really enjoy the idea for them. Their backstory revolves around their kintsugi markings (which is to fix broken things with gold, a symbol that flaws, mistake, etc. make you more beautiful). While I won’t say the reason why they have them, I will say that it doesn’t really have anything to do with their stutter. I don’t want to accidentally or unintentionally make a stereotypical stuttering character.
