I had someone like this. Me and my friend were working together in class, then one of his friends came out of no where to watch up do the work. He realized that I wasn’t speaking that much. His friend: “Why aren’t you talking?” My friend: “He has a bad stutter so he just writes his answers down and shares them with me.” His friend: “He has vocal cords, he could talk.” His friend left, me and my friend just turned to each other and laughed. I compared this to telling someone in a wheelchair, “you have legs, you could walk.” Like I get where he’s coming from but he’s just ignorant. Fyi, I do talk with my voice still, just only when it’s mandatory. My friends are understanding of my disability and doesn’t force me to talk. I do think speech impediment/stuttering should be taken more seriously as a disability and should be more well known. Everyone stutters, but they all seem to right it off as, “so what, just talk.”
