The absolutist statement (which you didn’t say but for the sake of argument let’s pretend is being contended) that all desire causes suffering is wrong. Desiring a drink of water when you are thirsty or helping a friend who is injured, for example, #alleviates suffering. Desire is complicated. I desire to be fluent, but I believe that is partly a noble desire. That is to increase the happiness of others through fun conversation etc and to be able to get a better job are positive things. If it was to impress others and to dominate them (which I cannot lie I have been tempted to do in conversation) then it is ignoble.
