This has happened to me a few times too, the most recent incident about a year ago. I was ordering take out over the phone, and the restaurant worker said “I’m sorry, but I think the connection is dropping.” I acted quickly before they could hang up though, and told them it’s not the phone - I just stutter. When I went into the restaurant to pick up my order, they were super apologetic and friendly. However, I have been treated very rudely a handful of times by other service workers before. I think the general ignorance about the existence or nature of this speech disorder, combined with the fact that my stuttering is severe, just throws these people off. I usually give them the benefit of the doubt at first, but if they continue to treat me with hostility even after I’ve explained to them my speech disability, then I just write them off as shitty human beings and pay them no mind.
