Interview problems/ advice I’ll first start by giving a background on who I am. I am a 24 year-old male living in the United States. I have had a stutter my whole life but I have been privileged to have an amazing supports system (parents, family, and friends). I have lived with a stutter and have never really had any problems with my stutter other than the occasional glare or comment from a stranger. I have a hard time saying that my stutter is a disability considering I feel that it has never held me back in any sort of way. Now forward to today, I had a job interview for a position that I would consider overly qualified for. I have had some contacts contact them and told them about my stutter. I have a masters degree and experience in the field. I won’t say the company or person but the position was for a part-time front desk person. During the interview the interviewer made comments like “we need someone with clear communication skills”, talked about how I needed to fix the problem (wouldn’t explicitly say stutter) and that I could be considered for the position later if I could fix the problem, and other comments implying that I wasn’t able to perform the job. I would consider my stutter mild, as it occurs the most when meeting new people and in stressful situations. I understand that employers would prefer someone that doesn’t have a stutter over someone that does have one but I felt that I demonstrated my experience in that field. It was a very uncomfortable interview overall. Even though I provided examples of leading groups individually with communication, phone calling, and other examples of communication, the interviewer didn’t seem to understand. I was wondering if anyone had any experiences similar to this one and any advice they could give to me. I luckily have other opportunities so this isn’t the only one but it is definitely discouraging. If anyone could offer any advice I would appreciate it. Thank you!
