My son is a person who stutters. He’s 18 and will be going to college in Fall 2022. He’s done speech therapy when he was younger. Anyway I’ve always told him he has other ways to communicate with people. Such as writing it out on paper (or on his phone in a pinch). He does use his speech to talk. And writing it down when he needs to. He’s learning what works for him. As his mother, I am also person who stutters (for 46 years now). You could say I have had a lot of practice. If I might have trouble getting my words out — I just tell people that I have a stutter. People are generally understanding if they’re aware. I don’t always stutter. I also learned to speak slower. For me, if I’m relaxed and not anxious , my voice box and throat won’t tighten up. I know myself. What situations work for or against me. I know my stress or anxiety levels — so I try to deal with stress in my life. I have a lot of empathy for my son — because I know how it is. I have a lot of empathy for you and anyone who stutters. Be patient with yourself.
