I’ve taught middle school for 24 years. My stuttering had ranged from very mild to moments of complete blocks. Yeah, some kids will make giggle, etc. Use your stutter as a teachable moment. Kids all feel like they are different ( even the “cool” kids) and have innate empathy. I’m working at being more forthcoming with my stuttering, as many do not realize how much it affects me. So now when I’m meeting a new class or colleague, I let them know up front that I stutter and if they would like to know more about it, I’m happy to educate them. Most people think it’s brave that you are there- front and center doing your thing. For students I’ve had who stutter, it’s been invaluable for them to see me navigate stuttering successfully. Is it hard sometimes, and even at 50 years old I feel like a scared kid hoping to not be called on in meetings at times. But, I am proud of not hiding from this opportunity to do a career I wanted to do. There are reasons to not go into teaching, but stuttering should not be one of them.
