Does anyone else think that speech classes in elementary school only made things worse?

Does anyone else think that speech classes in elementary school only made things worse? It made me really selfconscious about my stuttering and made me not want to speak at all. I think a lot of covert stutters start to be covert because of speech classes. I'm not sure if they made things worse, I have no way to prove that but I guarantee they definitely did not make things better. What are your thoughts?
