I try not to anticipate it. The anticipation is what sets you up for a bigger crash. For class introductions, I sit where I think I will be first to speak or second. There’s no buildup. But this is what I found really helps me, I don’t wait to be asked my name. When I meet someone, the first thing is out of my mouth is “hello, my name is Howtobegoodagain and I would like some help with .....” again, I don’t give myself room to panic about it. My last name is African so I usually have to spell that out, so I spell it out using military alphabet and if the person is a doorknob, using silly words like K as in knuckle post , or n as in narcissist. Looking for strange words that start with the letters in my name sort of distracts me. I do this very calmly and slowly and it helps a lot but I usually have a bit more dysfluencies here. Lastly, if I am at school, I’ll just give them my badge. They love to ask my for ID number so I just slide it across the counter and they prefer it. Numbers are hardest. I think liking your name also helps. I love my name and it’s easy and common across all cultures and also interesting and beautiful. I almost never have people mispronounce it ... it gives off good vibes as well. I think I’d stutter a lot more on my name if it was Gertrude, or Simphrose.
