How can Mindfulness improve stuttering? I found a mindfulness PDF from an SLP and researcher which is very interesting. **Summary of the MINDFULNESS pdf:** Mindfulness is learning to notice where attention goes (passive observation) and to choose where to place it (active focus). It is not a relaxation trick, not “emptying the mind”, nor a moral — it’s attention training with practical consequences for speech. Benefits: Sharper, more accurate self-observation (what you actually do) Mindfulness trains people to notice the raw sensory events of speaking (breath, articulator sensations, sound) rather than verbal descriptions or labels. That helps identify the actual components of a stuttering episode (overt motor behaviours and subtle pre-patterns) - which is a prerequisite for changing them. \- Practicing present-moment observation reduces the tendency to run on past memories of how people reacted. This yields a clearer read of listeners’ real responses in the moment, stopping needless over-corrections or anticipatory changes that can worsen speech. \- Focusing on raw experience (sensations, sounds, emotions) reduces verbal value judgments about speech performance. Because stuttering is strongly tied to judgments (“this will sound bad”), lowering that evaluation tendency reduces anticipatory fear and pressure that often precipitate stuttering. By repeatedly observing responses and one’s limits, practitioners often come to accept that full control is not required for effective communication. That faith that message can get across even if every sound isn’t perfect - lowers fear and the grip of anticipation. Note: Things can feel worse before they feel better: initial increased awareness may make stuttering seem worse (because you notice more), even while it sets the stage for improvement. Avoid turning mindfulness into “positive-thinking” labeling (eg mere self-praise or switching negative labels to positive labels) because that still traps you in evaluation. Mindful practice asks for non-judgmental observation instead. *Source:* [*https://www.stammeringresearch.org/mindfulness.pdf*](https://www.stammeringresearch.org/mindfulness.pdf) \~\~ Your thoughts? https://preview.redd.it/8ri5hhko6pnf1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cc3035cb029d6ce0e2c86d9528a6f909f444646c
