Fluency shaping (prolongations) works for some people. Others hate it and I understand that. Why encumber your speech further for something that is not reliable? For me, it has been a lifesaver. If you can find a good SLP, it is worth it to have them coach you. I'll try to explain how I do it. Consider driving a car a long ways. Your steering becomes automatic and you are thinking about other things. If you get in a jam, you quickly become aware of the steering and take control. Speech has also has an automatic mode and an intentional controlled mode. Stuttering blocks happen somewhere deep in the automatic mode and you must use conscious control to get unstuck. Most PWS just push harder in automatic mode. Instead, you can learn the mental agility to move back and forth from auto mode to control mode. At home or in the speech therapists office, it is easier to prolong the word and get unstuck. However, it is much more difficult to take your new skill out into the real world. But you can do it with enough perseverance. When I get stuck I visualize the word and prolong it. But listen to this. You must prolong it longer then you think you need to. I mean a lot more. You brain will get the message that you are not just pushing harder. Instead, this instruction is so different that it transfers from auto to control mode and releases the block. Resist the temptation to shorted the prolongation because it feels like it will work. Agree before hand that you are going stretch longer than you need to. Voluntary prolongations are a good practice because you are practicing mental agility for low stress words. Good luck!
