Disclosing my stutter and talking about it with people
Content
Disclosing my stutter and talking about it with people I don’t know if other people have similar experiences, but I used to absolutely HATE talking about my stutter. I would get so embarrassed and ashamed talking about it. This would create a lot of awkward friendships for me because I would be friends with people for years and literally never mention my stutter. I knew that they knew that I had a stutter, but they wouldn’t mention it probably because they thought it would be rude. It would just create this elephant in the room that we never talked about. Recently, I have been more open about my stutter and started to talk about it with some of my friends. It was hard and embarrassing at first, but it felt really good to talk about and now there is not this elephant in the room that neither of us discuss. It makes me feel less afraid to stutter around them too and I can enjoy being with them more. If you feel like it’s hard to discuss your stutter, I would suggest starting out with talking about it with to close friends or family. You don’t have to start out by talking about every detail about how it makes you feel, just mention a little something about it in a conversation. It will take a huge weight off of your shoulders:)
