I took speech classes as well, but they didn't help me any. However, I am not sure that it was because of the class. I think it was more of me just believing that I could never stop stuttering, so there is no point in trying. Knowing what I know now as a college graduate if I would've done the things that they told me too I could probably learn to speak better. I will note that my stuttering is relatively minor. I only stutter every once in a while and when I try not too. If I am concentrating more on what I want to say instead of how I say it, I feel I don't stutter as much. Speech classes probably does make it worse, because as a kid you most likely didn't realize it and thought everyone just talked like that sometimes. Putting in front in center that you are different in the way you think most likely does make you a little self conscious about it now.
