These terms are used interchangeably by everyone in the industry, there's not much of a difference in job descriptions. My current job title is "software development engineer" 🙃. About the rest, there's still communication required in this field. I have a very severe stutter and I chose this field because of it but it's not a get out of jail card for stutterers. Although it will vary from company to company and even team to team in a big company, i.e. if you're working in an internal platform you would most likely just be talking to your PM, QAs etc and some other devs. In other teams, like customer facing software, or a new project etc, there will be a lot more communication required for planning, discussing issues and solutions with stakeholders on top of the other meetings discussed before. For me, my stutter got so worse that i can barely speak a word in 20+ seconds, sometimes more, just to be stuck on the next. Got rejected because of it quite a few times, and in my current company i communicate through just typing what i have to say. Someone either reads it out in meetings or adjusts around it. This is not ideal but thankfully my current employer is kind enough to allow it. I have to write v detailed documents etc especially for stuff like integrations where other teams might be involved or mostly i have someone else in my team who takes cares of the external communication. This completely rules out the chance of being a manager or being promoted to a senior/lead position for me unfortunately. But we do have a PM in a different team and also an engineer who stutter mildly, maybe 1 word in 2 sentences. It is noticeable but they can communicate and get their point across without taking much additional time. The PM just got promoted and is taking on more projects and responsibilities, tons of meetings etc so it's definitely possible for you as well. Be prepared to face some backlash though as there are always some asshole recruiters and companies but there are always good companies out there as well who don't care about it as long as you're getting the job done efficiently. Good luck.
